No, washing your face ten times a day does not help

Growing up, I seldom had any issues with my skin. I didn’t really have acne as a teenager, save for the occasional pimple that would pop up on my face once in a blue moon. I simply assumed that I was blessed with perfect skin and that it would stay spotless and clear forever.

Unfortunately, life had other plans.

As soon as I turned 19, I began to breakout severely on my cheeks, to the point where touching my face felt painful and looking in the mirror every morning made me anxious. At the time, I had hoped that it…

She was a beauty to behold

I first met Pinky during a visit to my neighbor’s house. I remember peering into a cardboard box to find three wary, bright-eyed kittens staring back at me. Apparently, a stray cat had laid a litter of kittens in my neighbor’s backyard and would now leave them there while she went out hunting - or doing whatever it is that cats do - around the neighborhood.

As I stared back at the tiny creatures, I found myself intrigued by one of them. She was a tabby kitten with compelling green eyes and for me, it was love at first sight.

The constant pressure look good during a pandemic is exhausting.

When the clock struck twelve on January 1st 2021, life didn’t just go back to normal. Apparently, a new rotation around the sun wasn’t an antidote to the hellish nightmare that began last year. After creeping its way into almost every country on the planet, coronavirus has affected millions, crashed stock markets and even caused an economic recession.

Oddly enough, a global pandemic has in no way diminished the ever-present pressure to look good. In fact, interest in the search term “glow up” peaked on Google during August of 2020. With a sudden deluge of videos on YouTube this year…

Group interviews don’t have to be as scary as they sound

Interviews can be terrifying. It’s not very pleasant to have a stranger who can (potentially) change your future sitting across from you, judging your every move.

But there’s something that can make the experience a thousand times worse- having the rest of the candidates who are competing with you be in the same room.

A group interview is an interview technique in which several candidates are interviewed simultaneously for similar positions.

Group interviews can sound daunting, especially if you’ve never participated in one before. The idea of being…

#4: It’s okay to mess up.

Anybody who knows me will tell you that I absolutely adore animals. When I was a little kid, my parents knew that I was smart enough to reject candies from a stranger and yet, foolish enough to be lured in with the prospect of petting a kitten or a puppy.

In middle school, I was a good student with straight As and the only times I was sent to the principal’s office was when I was caught feeding and petting the stray dogs in our campus (worth it).

To this day, if I hear a meow in the distance, I…

Studies have shown that people with an internal locus of control achieve more

In 1954, American psychologist Julian B. Rotter came up with a term that categorized people based on the extent to which they felt in control of their own lives. He called it the “locus of control”.

Based on this concept, individuals were classified into two groups, namely, internals and externals. Internals believed that their successes and failures were a result of their own actions where as externals believed the outcomes of events in their lives depended on factors out of their control such as luck or fate.

The locus of control concept has since generated much research in the field…

The answer might surprise you

I’m sure that at this point, everyone has seen the memes on Instagram and Facebook where introverts proudly proclaim our time has come.

Some say their lives haven’t changed one bit as they prefer to be alone anyway whereas others express that they’re glad to finally escape social gatherings without having to make up ridiculous excuses.

However, seven months into the global pandemic, much has changed and it’s safe to say that staying at home isn’t the paradise introverts imagined it to be.

Losing the Joy of Solitude

It is a well known fact that introverts love solitude. They use it to recharge, dedicate time…

The unbeatable advantages of having a 9-to-5 job

Many people want to hear that the only thing standing between them and their dreams is their corporate job. They like to believe that the only way to “make it” is to risk everything.

I used to be one of those people too.

That all changed, however, when I attended a live-stream hosted by Tanya Nambiar, a musician I admire deeply. A self-proclaimed “middle-class hustler”, she’s also a voice-over artist and the founder of El Diablo Sauces, a company that sells fresh condiments with natural ingredients.

During the live-stream, one of her followers posed a question that I myself wanted…

Enhance your appearance with a clear conscience

Don’t let pretty packaging in pastel colors fool you- the beauty industry might be shiny and glossy on the outside, but there’s a lot of ugliness that lurks beneath the surface. According to Cruelty Free International, around half a million animals go through the pain and torture of cosmetic testing each year. Apart from horrific details of experiments such as dripping harsh chemicals into an animal’s eyes without pain relief and repeated oral force-feeding, these sentient beings are often caged and isolated with no regard for their needs or feelings.

Now, the good news: there are hundreds of cruelty-free beauty…

An analysis of the growing animosity towards teenage girls online

About a month ago, I came across a video of a man mocking a girl on TikTok. The girl was just having fun, doing an innocent challenge and showing off some dance moves. What perplexed me was that he seemed to be in his late 40s or his early 50s. How could this possibly be any of his concern?

On exploring, I found compilations of similar videos of men either poking fun at or passing derogatory comments about teenage girls in TikTok videos. This wasn’t the first time I’d seen something like this, although manifested in different forms. …
